How to Write a Credit Report Dispute Letter

If you have inaccurate or out-of-date information on your credit report, you can dispute it by phone, online, or in writing.

Phoning the credit bureau may be easier, in order to create a paper trail, experts recommend that you do everything in writing, or online.

When disputing items by mail, start your letter with a list of items you are disputing, including all facts supporting and explaining your case. You also need to include copies of all documentations that support your case and include a copy of your credit report with the item in question circled. Do not send originals. The credit reporting agency must by law forward all relevant data you provided them to the company that originally provided the information. Once the company receives the request for verification from the credit bureau, the company must investigate, review, and report the results to the credit bureau.

Below is a sample of how to write your dispute letter.
