How to Make Your Dispute Not FrivolousThe credit bureau has to investigate the items listed in your dispute letter within 30 days.
Unless, however, if they consider your dispute frivolous. If this happens, then they have five business days to notify you and inform you why they consider your dispute frivolous and what you must do to convert it into one that will start a reinvestigation. One way to prevent your dispute from being considered as frivolous is to not send a laundry list of items. If you send a long list of items, it may be viewed as you trying to overwhelm the credit-reporting agency. For this reason, it is better for you to send only a few disputed items in a single letter. Once the investigation is finished, the credit bureau must send you the written results and a free copy of your updated credit report, if the dispute results in the removal or change of the information. If the item is changed or removed, the bureau cannot place that information back into your report, unless the company providing the information proves that in fact the information is correct. At this point, the credit bureau must then provide you with the name of the company that has verified the information as accurate.
